Non Sequiturs

During the month of October, 2024, I will have a very small show of my photographs at Rev Coffee, in Smyrna, Georgia, my hometown.

Rev Coffee is consistently ranked in the top ten coffee shops in metropolitan Atlanta. It is consistently packed with patrons as well. The coffee is great, the food is great, and it is very difficult to find a table or even a seat at the bar. Nick, the owner, is very supportive of local artists and musicians, and I have had a couple of photography exhibits there. The wall space is limited, and I can usually display no more than about twenty relatively small prints. It makes the job of curating extremely difficult.

There is no way that anyone can be totally objective about one’s art. Even if I could be objective, I have thousands of photographs to critique. What will make an entertaining show? After all, that’s really what it is about. I want the show to be cohesive and fun. I want the images to be strong, and to have some kind of logical flow. What if there is no cohesion or logic to them. What if my photographs barely maintain a connection to me, much more to each other?

That is the dilemma. So, I did the best I could. I picked about twenty photographs that I think make a good showing. If the selections seem random, well, they are not. The title, “Non Sequiturs” kind of fits. The Latin phrase is usually reserved to speech and writing, and is a statement that appears to have no connection to what was said previously. It can also be an abrupt transition or event that appears to be unrelated to what has just happened. I picked the photos because I liked them, and maybe they will entertain the viewer.

I have had two other shows at Rev, and I know that people will take a close look at the photographs that I hang. In fact, I had one stolen the last show there. The perp eventually came forward and confessed that he just wanted to get the photograph before someone else did. It did not make me feel much better, but at the time I took the “theft” as a backhanded compliment. He also paid me for it. This time I will have a better system in case I make a sale.

I created a reel of the show. Most of you will not see it personally. So enjoy this as well. Here is the link.
